Fashion careers go far beyond the runway

When you think about a career in fashion, you might picture a designer sketching clothes or someone working in a retail store. Those jobs matter, but they’re only one part of a much larger industry.

A fashion organisation such as PVH, which includes brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein, brings together people with a wide range of skills. Its teams can include marketers, graphic designers, accountants, sustainability specialists, human resources staff and creative directors.

Some employees help decide how a brand looks and speaks to customers. Others plan advertising campaigns, manage social media or organise events. Finance teams track budgets and help the business make sound decisions, while technology staff support online stores and the systems used across the company.

There are also roles focused on how products move from an idea to a shop floor or website. Buyers select ranges for customers, planners work out how much stock will be needed and logistics teams help products reach the right place at the right time.

People interested in sustainability may work on reducing waste, reviewing materials or improving how clothing is produced. Legal teams help protect brands and manage contracts, while human resources staff recruit employees and support workplace culture.

Not every career follows a direct path. Someone may begin in a retail store, move into head office and later work in training or marketing. Another person might study business, technology or communications before finding a role in fashion.

The industry needs people who can understand customers, solve problems and work well with others. It also needs employees who are curious about how brands operate and willing to learn as their role changes.

You don’t need to be able to sew or draw to build a career in fashion. Your interest in numbers, writing, technology, people or the environment could lead to a role you haven’t considered yet.
